The Barton County Community College women’s tennis team pulled off one win but lost the war Monday in Arkansas City as the Lady Cougars were handled by the No. 9 ranked Tigers of Cowley College 8-1 in Jayhawk Conference play.
Daniela Sanz, ranked No. 46 in the latest ITA national rankings, pulled off the big win at the No. 1 singles with a come-from-behind victory defeating the Tigers’ Sarah Frendo. Frendo, unranked due to joining the Tiger squad at semester, took the first set 6-3 with Sanz battling back to take the second by the same identical score. In a fitting third set the duo matched stroke for stroke until Sanz finally pulled out the super tie-breaker 10-8 handing Frendo just her fourth loss of the season in nineteen matches.
Sanz’ singles win avenged Barton’s No. 1 doubles loss earlier in the day as she and partner Idah Longwe lost a hard fought 8-5 match against Frendo and Eva Forneiron.
The Tigers pretty well swept through the rest of the matches allowing Barton just a single game in each of the remaining doubles matches and a mere seven games in the remaining five singles matches.
The Lady Cougars will begin preparation for the Region VI Tournament to be held April 23-24 in Liberal, Kansas.
