LAWRENCE – Twenty students have been selected to receive the University of Kansas Madison and Lila Self Memorial Scholarship for the 2021-2022 academic year.
The Self Memorial Scholarship is a merit-based scholarship that is awarded to outstanding undergraduate students from KU who will transition into a full-time master’s or doctoral degree program at KU in the fall semester. Students who were selected demonstrated achievement in leadership and scholarship, and they possess the ability to envision and attain goals that require energy and tenacity. The Self Memorial Scholarship provides each recipient with a $10,000 scholarship award applied to tuition and fees, leadership and career development training, and an interdisciplinary cohort of graduate students. The leadership and career development training, called the Scholar Development Program, complements the specialized education and training provided by the graduate programs.
Madison “Al” and Lila Self were deeply motivated by the idea that developing and investing in young leaders was vital for a successful future. The Selfs began their legacy of supporting graduate students in 1989 with the establishment of the Self Graduate Fellowship. Since 1991, the Self Graduate Fellowship has supported over 200 doctoral students.
The Self Memorial Scholarship was launched and permanently endowed in 2014, and the first scholars were awarded in 2018-2019. The overall mission of the Self Graduate Programs is to provide funding and development opportunities for exceptional students who demonstrate the promise to make significant contributions to their fields of study and society as a whole.
The new Self Memorial Scholars for 2021-2022:
1. Jordan Avery, of Lawrence: Bachelor’s degree in psychology; incoming master’s student in counseling psychology
2. Edan Belihu, of Olathe: Bachelor’s degree in social work; incoming master’s student in social work
3. Logan Bell, of Lawrence: Bachelor’s degree in English-rhetoric, language & writing; incoming master’s student in higher education administration
4. Andrew Bertucci, of New Orleans: Bachelor’s degree in political science; incoming master’s student in public administration
5. Mary Bisbee, of Rosalia: Bachelor’s degree in anthropology; incoming master’s student in public administration
6. Sarah Brooks, of Wichita: Bachelor’s degree in speech-language-hearing: sciences and disorders; incoming doctoral student in audiology at KU Medical Center.
7. Nicole D’Souza, of Overland Park: Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering; incoming master’s student in bioengineering
8. Sarah Glaser, of Eagan, Minnesota: Bachelor’s degree in speech-language-hearing; incoming master’s student in speech language pathology
9. Talita Leikam, of Robertsbridge, United Kingdom: Bachelor’s degree in social work; incoming master’s student in social work
10. Gerell Miller, of Goodland: Bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering; incoming master’s student in aerospace engineering
11. Madison Moore, of Overland Park: Bachelor’s degrees in philosophy, political science, and in women, gender & sexuality studies; incoming master’s student in philosophy
12. Corinne Nguyen, of Lawrence: Bachelor’s degree in speech-language-hearing; incoming master’s student in speech language pathology
13. Siri Panchananam, of Overland Park: Bachelor’s degree in psychology, minor in business; incoming master’s student in counseling psychology
14. Laura Phillips, of Perry: Bachelor’s degrees in classical languages and in ecology, evolution & organismal biology; incoming master’s student in classics
15. Kyle Ross, of Olathe: Bachelor’s degree in accounting; incoming master’s student in accounting
16. Elizabeth Santillan, of Kansas City, Kansas: Bachelor’s degree in speech-language-hearing; incoming master’s student in speech language pathology
17. Noelle Schlenk, of Olathe: Bachelor’s degree in biology with concentration in ecology, evolution & organismal biology; incoming master’s student in ecology & evolutionary biology
18. Gabrielle Schreiner, of Colwich: Bachelor’s degree in speech-language-hearing; incoming master’s student in speech language pathology
19. Mariah Sibley, of Hutchinson: Bachelor’s degrees in English and psychology; incoming master’s student in counseling psychology
20. Jaden Wilcoxson, of Clay Center: Bachelor’s degree in humanities; incoming master’s student in leadership in diversity & inclusion.
