Weathering the storm: The psychological factor

Not only do meteorologists master physics, they now must master psychology.  Forecasters are finding that some people tune severe weather messages out or they might even over-react.  People hear messages about potential, threatening weather that does not materialize and may tune out the next time there’s an actual urgent warning.  People have also left safe buildings to flee in their cars; and a car is the last place you want to be in a tornado.

Many people ignore the barriers or signs that warn you when a road has flooded, risking their lives.  A mere 6 inches of fast-moving flood water can knock over an adult. It takes just 12 inches of rushing water to carry away a small car, while 2 feet of rushing water can carry away most vehicles.

It’s that time of year.  We are in tornado alley so thinking about buying a storm shelter, a weather radio or preparing your storm shelter is necessary.  Nothing can replace common sense.  Lightning alone is a threat, so being proactive to protect yourself and your family is essential.  People should pay close attention to the daily and weekly weather forecast through television, radio or internet news and take heed to warning messages.  A tornado watch means a tornado could occur and precautions should be taken.  A tornado warning means the threat is imminent and you should go to a safe place immediately.  Never underestimate the power of nature.

There is always the possibly of death or injury, no matter the precaution one takes, but taking necessary precautions may save your life.
