The Barton Community College women’s golf team captured its fifth straight conference match of the season with a sixty-five stroke KJCCC Meet No. 5 victory. Held at StoneRidge Golf Club in Great Bend, Kansas, the Lady Cougars avenged a drubbing last season on their home course by increasing their lead by nineteen strokes on Tuesday’s final day nine holes. Barton ended with a team score of 504 while second place Dodge City Community College finished at 569 with Coffeyville Community College not able to post a team score due to player illness.
The news of the day came from the top individual play of Barton’s Natthakan Teeratrakul and Coffeyville Community College’s Julia Dierker. With Teeratrakul holding a one stroke lead into the final nine, Dierker made a charge in the early holes aided by a two shot swing with a perfectly played No. 3 for birdie while Teeratrakul scored a bogey. Not willing to relinquish her season long title of the top Region VI golfer, Teeratrakul stayed the course while Dierker ran into trouble on the dog-legged seventh to seal her second place fate. Teeratrakul extended her school record straight conference wins to six dating back to last season firing a final round of 40 to finish with a 117 while Dierker’s 41 put her two strokes into second place at 119.
Hye Rin Kim, the only Region VI player to defeats Teeratrakul coming back in early fall at a non-conference meet, shot another solid round finishing with a 41 to end the meet in third at 121.
On the final day, six of the seven Lady Cougars broke 50. Madison Walden followed her 86 with a 46 to finish fifth while Abbie Thelen‘s 46 moved her into a sixth place tie with teammate Madison Werth who carded a 48.
Competing as individuals, Lea Clubb continued her hot play firing a team third-best final round of 45 to jump up to the eighth spot while Presley Smith finished with a 59.
Dodge City’s Tiara Diaz made the big leap of the day in the individual standings tying Teeratrakul for Tuesday low score honors firing a 40 to leapfrog from seventh to fourth. Teammate Alyssa Vazquez fell out of the first day’s top ten having run into major problems on a hole finishing with a 54 and four strokes out of medalist honors. Colby Community College’s Marissa Bland fired the fifth best final round score of 43 to jump in at No. 10.
