Over forty of the best Kansas basketball players closed out their high school career this past Sunday at the fourth annual Central Kansas High School All-Star Basketball Classic hosted by Barton Community College in Great Bend, Kansas. In the girls’ game the National team coached by Great Bend High School’s Carrie Minton defeated Cimarron High School David Ediger’s American team 91-86. Not to be outdone by the girls’ high scoring affair in the earlier game, the boys put on run and gun clinic as Quinter High School’s John Crist’s National squad outscored Central Plains High School Brett Rolfs’ American team 117-96.
In the individual competitions St. John High School’s Dean Wade swept both boys’ awards, high flying to the slam dunk crown while displaying his outside shot in the three-point competition defeating Derek McClure 12-9 in the finals. On the girls side, Caylee Richardson of Hesston High School outshot Corie Fischer of Ottawa High School in the finals 16-10.
Most Valuable Players were also awarded as Ellinwood’s Rachel Doll took home the National girls team’s honor knocking down four three-pointers on the way to a game high twenty-six points while Brenna McClure of Lyons High School made 8-of-9 free throws to earn the American team MVP finishing with nineteen points. On the boys side, Lawrence High School’s John Barbee was the National Team’s MVP scoring twenty-points while Dean made the clean sweep of awards adding the American Team’s MVP award with his thirty-three point performance including burying five beyond the arc.
