TOPEKA –(July 15, 2015) – Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt today marked Military Consumer Protection Day by urging Kansans to report scams and rip-offs against service members, veterans and their families.

“Our military men and women and their families sacrifice each and every day to keep our country safe,” Schmidt said. “Kansas law gives our office special authority to go after those who prey on military families, and we are working toward better cooperation with other states and with federal authorities so there is no place to hide.”

Military Consumer Protection Day, which this year is July 15, is recognized annually nationwide by the Federal Trade Commission and a network of more than 40 federal, state and municipal agencies, including the Kansas Attorney General’s Office. This is the third year for the recognition. The Kansas Consumer Protection Act provides enhanced penalties for scammers who prey on military members, veterans or families of deployed military personnel, a provision added to the law at Schmidt’s urging when he served in the Kansas Senate.
