The City of Wichita is implementing a new program to help people with criminal backgrounds find stable work. It’s called the Fair Chance Initiative, where public sector job applications will no longer as candidates to check a box if they have been convicted of a felony. They hope by removing the felony box, ex-offenders promote their qualifications as an employee, before sharing their criminal background. There will be restrictions for public safety, however, this opportunity gives them a fair chance to get in the door. Sunflower Community Action Group, another driving force behind the initiative, hopes the private sector follows suit.
