Reno County Crime Stoppers, a non-profit organization, helps to protect communities and schools throughout Reno County by partnering with law enforcement and the media to solicit and reward anonymous tips that prevent and solve crimes. How it works: Reno County Crime Stoppers encourages members of the community to assist local law enforcement in the fight against crime by overcoming the two key elements that inhibit personal involvement: fear and apathy. Crime Stoppers receives tips anonymously on the Crime Stoppers tips phone line, via the mobile app, and by text messaging. Callers remain anonymous and are eligible to receive a cash reward of up to $1,000 if the information they give leads to an arrest or grand jury indictment of a felony offender. Structure and Funding: A civilian community board of directors oversees the organization, sets policy, and provides direction for the financial and promotional activities of the program. The program is funded by private donations from concerned citizens and businesses and fundraising. NO TAX DOLLARS are involved. The board, which is made up of persons from throughout Reno County, meets on a monthly basis to evaluate arrests and to decide on the size of rewards to be paid, up to $1,000. Rewards are then distributed in a private manner to the callers. Many callers actually choose not to collect their rewards. Does Crime Stoppers work? The answer is quite simply, “yes.” Since the start of Reno County Crime Stoppers in 1985, over 9,000 calls have been received, resulting in hundreds of arrests and the recovery of substantial amounts of drugs and property. Calls have included information on murder, robbery, rape, assaults, drug and firearm offenses. Who benefits: Everyone benefits from Crime Stoppers. Citizens of Reno County – criminals are caught, stolen property is recovered and drugs are confiscated. Law Enforcement Agencies – relationships between citizens and officers are enhanced and strengthened, allowing more time for solving other crimes. What you can do to help: Invest in a safer community – a safer place to live and work. Support Crime Stoppers. If you would like to make a donation to the program send your tax exempt contributing to: Crime Stoppers of Reno County, Inc., P.O. Box 1447, Hutchinson, KS 67504-1447. Contributions are needed to sustain this successful program.
