Newton: The City of Newton reports at the Tuesday May 12th meeting, the City Commission received an update on the Newton YMCA project. Todd Tangeman, COO at Newton Medical Center and a member of the YMCA fundraising team, said the project had received a matching grant from the Mabee Foundation and is now just $130,000 shy of reaching its $5 million dollar goal. Dennis Schoenebeck, CEO of the Greater Wichita YMCA, shared updated architectural renderings and described the floor plan of the facility. The original plans called for the 55,000-square-foot facility but have been expanded to the 75,000 square feet based on community response. This size will be comparable to Wichita’s North Y at K-96 and Woodlawn. The average Y is 40,000 square feet. A groundbreaking event is planned for 4:30pm on May 21. Construction will begin this summer, with an opening date expected in fall 2016.
