Playing three matches in two day, the ailing Barton Community College women’s tennis team had a tough stretch dropping all three matches. Beginning play Friday at the Oklahoma Tennis Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, the Lady Cougars were outmatched in a pair of 9-0 losses to No. 4 ranked North Central Texas College and No. 5 ranked Seminole State College. Barton then returned to the court in North Newton, Kansas, where the Lady Cougars lost a 5-4 decision to NAIA member Ottawa University dropping Barton to 1-6 on the season.
In Saturday’s duel with Ottawa, Barton picked up doubles victories in the No.1 while benefitting in a forfeit victory in the No. 3 match. The top duo of Daniela Sanz and Margaux Perez dispatched the Braves’ Madeline Bellew and Jennifer Luedtke 8-4. The No. 2 doubles tandem of Barbara Codognotto and Karli Beck nearly made it a sweep in the doubles but fell short 9-8 to Ottawa’s Lexis Hibbs and Danika Good. Kelly Brauer and Stephanie Langer picked up the forfeit victory in the No. 3 doubles.
Sanz finished off her undefeated day knocking off the Braves No. 1 player Bellew 6-1, 6-1. The injury bug took its toll on Barton in the No. 2 singles as Perez had to retire after being up in the match 4-0 to Luedtke. The Braves then swept the next three singles matches as Langer, who had to move up in the lineup due to a Codognotto injury, fell to Hibbs 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 3 match. Beck lost the No. 4 singles 6-2, 6-0 to Good while Brauer fell 6-2, 6-1 to Kimisha Peterson in the No. 5 singles. The Lady Cougars were awarded the forfeit victory in the No. 6 singles.
Barton’s next action will come Tuesday, April 7, as the Lady Cougars head to Hesston, Kansas, for a 2:00 p.m. duel at Hesston College.
