Applications are now being accepted for a pair of $1,000 scholarships through the Greyhound Hall Of Fame, with the deadline for submittal set at Tuesday, Mar. 15.
The Hall Of Fame will award the Jason Dean Hunt Memorial and the Edward J. Keelan Memorial scholarships to two worthy students involved in the greyhound industry that are pursuing degrees in higher education.
The Jason Dean Hunt Memorial honors the memory of Army Spc. Jason Dean Hunt, who was one of the 13 victims in the Ft.Hood shooting in Killeen, Tx., in 2009. “J.D.,” as he was known by family and friends, was the son of former NGA member Gale Hunt and the grandson of Kay Smith, of Frederick, Ok. The shooting occurred just few weeks after Kay was inducted into the Greyhound Hall Of Fame.
The Edward Keelan Memorial Scholarship, which was initiated last year, honors the memory of legendary New England track operator and developer, Edward J. Keelan III. The iconic industry leader, who served as president of the AGTOA and The World Greyhound Racing Federation (which he also helped create), was inducted into the Greyhound Hall Of Fame in 1985.
An application for the scholarships appears on this website (under NGA Members, Forms and Greyhound Hall Of Fame) or you can download it here. They are also available through the NGA (785-263-4660) or the Greyhound Hall Of Fame (785-263-3000) upon request. The scholarships will be announced in early April, and recipients will be honored and recognized at the Thursday night (Apr. 28) awards ceremony at the Hall Of Fame during the Spring Meet.
