THE STAFF SERGEANT

When you hear Staff Sergeant who do you think of?  Do you know someone that was or is now a sergeant? I know one very well and she tries to keep everything running smoothly in her home and the office she works in during the day.

This Staff Sergeant is smaller than most but still bosses the other recruits that live with her at home and works with her during the day. She is sweet to all that come into the workplace and she tries to keep the boys in the office in line. They probably think she is more like a drill sergeant because she thinks she is the one that makes the rules.

The 4 boys that work with her are at least 5 times her size, but she doesn’t seem to notice, she thinks she is in charge where ever she is. She is always the first to meet clients when they come into the workplace. She is very welcoming to new and old friends alike and doesn’t want the rowdy boys to bother them.

I met the Staff Sergeant when I had my first appointment with her boss and I always enjoy the little bit of time I can spend with her. I always take snacks, when I have an appointment with her boss because she is such a ray of sunshine for everyone that enters her halls. I imagine she shares the snacks with the boys, not willingly or happily, but a lady always shares.

Even though I only need to see her boss every 3-4 months, she knows my voice when I arrive. I always stop in the hall to talk to one of the women that work there and when the staff sergeant hears my voice she will come out to see me if she is not in an office with the door shut.

The staff sergeant always has a happy smile on her face and will hurry to greet me when I am in the hallway. She will sit and have a short little chat with me and then she is off to see if anyone needs her help. Of course, she has to check to see if the boys are doing what they are supposed to be doing before she goes back to her office.

By the time I arrive for my appointment, usually around 10 in the morning, the boys are usually in their office and they are out of her hair for a while. So she is free to meet and greet the customers by herself as they come in for their appointment. Even though I am always happy to see her boss, the little staff sergeant is the ray of sunshine that brightens my day when I am there.

I wonder sometimes if she comes out to greet everyone that comes for an appointment with her boss, or are the snacks that I bring for everyone the draw to get her to come out of her office to greet me when I arrive. Whichever it is I am always glad to spend some time with her while I am there.

So, who is this little Staff Sergeant that tries to rule the roost at work, and at home? Her name is Lollipop and she is a black Jack Russell terrier and part Dachshund and she tries to boss around 4 short-haired hunting dogs and whoever else may dwell at the home of her boss.

When I had an appointment with her boss the other day, Lollipop and Tucker, a beautiful all white except for his ears, which are brown, short-haired hunting dog came out to greet me when I went back for the blood pressure check. Tucker arrived first in front of me and I gave him a couple of the treats but when Lollipop came to see me he politely moved over a little so she could stand in front of me, so she could get treats. Then they went on their merry way and I went back to see her boss and get my injection.

Lollipop reminds me of our two Cockers; it seems that big dog personalities come in small packages. Both of our cockers didn’t take any guff off bigger dogs at the groomers and they definitely could hold their own with a flock of turkeys in our yard. I am sure Lollipop does well holding her own with the boys, 4 large hunting dogs.

Her boss told me the other day that they just let her think she is in charge but I bet she gets her point across to the boys when necessary. To maintain the discipline if you can Miss Lollipop.  You are a bright ray of sunshine in your home and workplace and your boss is lucky to have a little Staff Sergeant to keep track of the four boys both at home and at work.
