Betting with Doris

When the baseball season last year was over my dollars were not in jeopardy of being lost to Doris or my amT (adopted mom Trouble). So far she isn’t as bad as Aline with the betting and hasn’t started to call me to see if I want to put a dollar on a football or basketball game. But the baseball season has started again so I will be getting texts from Doris about the games and wanting to bet.

Doris is an avid Royal’s fan and as most people know I have been a loyal New York Yankee fan since I was in the 7th grade. I was a Yankee fan many years before the Royal’s were even in existence. So I could see no reason to change at that point.

This last playoff and World Series season was like old times to me. Aline, that I used to bet with, was a Royals fan also. She wanted to bet on games all season but at least Doris gave me a break and it was only at the playoffs and World Series that she wanted to place bets.

And I am sure you know who I was betting on in the playoffs and who Doris was betting on. I lost that bet for the playoffs, and I was not a happy camper that my team lost to the nasty Royals as I call them.

She didn’t want to bet dollars on the playoffs, she wanted to bet on who would buy supper at Arby’s. She loves their chicken salad sandwich but by the time the playoffs were over the sandwich was not being offered until this summer.

So my money was safe until they offer the sandwich again and I will have to pay off my debt. I sure hope she doesn’t charge me interest on this bet; it could get expensive by the time the sandwich is offered again.

Aline was a mess when she won a bet and if I didn’t pay off immediately I heard about it loud and long. I was always surprised that she didn’t charge me interest until she got back to the beauty shop to collect after I lost a bet.

Doris was quick to let me know that I had lost the bet on the playoffs, even though I had watched them and was not happy that the Yankees lost. I had a text message the minute the game was over that I owed her a chicken salad sandwich.

Thank heavens we didn’t have cell phones or text messaging when Aline was alive and we were betting on games. I think she would have been as bad as or worse than Doris when the games were on as soon as I had lost a bet.

I never heard from Aline until after the game and I would get a phone call that I had lost, but if she had lost I heard nothing from her. But I would not let it slide and I would call her and tell her she had lost her dollar and to pay up at her next hair appointment.

When she arrived at the shop the door would fly open and a wadded up dollar would come flying into the shop. She would always have a snide remark about who had beaten her team. But I would just laugh, smooth out the dollar and put it in a drawer so it was there when I lost the next bet.

She always tipped me a dollar when she left after I finished her hair and I would put that dollar in the drawer too so I had money for a bet with her. We probably passed the same dollar bills back and forth for a long time.

The fact that Doris and I both have cell phones and text back and forth all the time made the World Series and the playoffs very interesting. She was very bad during the playoffs between the Yankees and the nasty Royals.

During the games if the Yankees did something really good I would get a text that said: BOO HISS!!  If the nasty Royals did something really good I would get a text from her that said: YIPPY SKIPPY FOR THE ROYALS!

Of course when my Yankees did well, I would always make sure that she had seen it and would send a text that said: ( YEA, GO YANKEES!) That would always get a snide remark in a return text. So we kept the airways busy with texting during the games between our favorite teams.

During the World Series, I chose the New York Mets as the team I would back, at least it was a New York team and the best part…… it was not the Royals. And the torture began again with Doris texting me during the games.

This time the bet for the Series was a dollar. Not on each game but on the outcome of the series. Doris was easier on me than Aline ever was. With Aline it was a $5 bet on the series. But having a bet with someone on the playoffs and the World Series always makes it more interesting. Betting with Doris is an adventure and will keep your fingers nimble texting back and forth.
