The Bethany College women’s soccer team traveled to Bethany, Okla., Monday afternoon to take on Southwestern Christian. The game ended in a 1-1 tie, which is the Swedes second tie game in three games.

Jill Owens opened the scoring for the game just over 20 minutes into the contest. Owens had a penalty kick blocked by Canales, but was able to collect the rebound and beat the keeper. The Swedes did not trail for long however. Nearly seven minutes later, Sarah Henderson took a pass from Shannon Markey and beat the goalkeeper from the middle of the penalty area for an equalizer. The goal was Henderson’s fifth of the year, all five coming in the last four games.

“We had a few key players out today and that gave a chance for a couple others to step up into some new roles,” said first year head coach John Markey. “Our leadership from the back line was key today. Erika Klein and Andrea Vidales-Guzman were great today. All in all we probably deserved a win but the result was fair and the team’s effort was great up until the end. I am very proud of this group and I am looking forward to getting into conference play.”

By the numbers:

  • The Swedes used Sarah Henderson‘s fifth goal of the season to tie the game 1-1 in the first half on a pass from Shannon Markey.
  • Bethany’s Jovana Canales made nine saves in the game at Southwestern Christian. Since she has come back, Canales has made 6.2 saves per game.
  • Henderson and Markey were the two Swedes who had shots on goal, eight total, against the Eagles.
