Since 2004, one program has awarded over $60 million in college scholarships and support services to deserving students. Each dark figure represents ten students.

(NAPS)—When over 50 percent of the recipients of a national scholarship program are awarded to students in a particular category, it’s time to take notice.

This is exactly what occurred when the Dell Scholars Program Class of 2015 was announced earlier this year, and 152 of the 300 awards were given to AVID students nationwide.

AVID, which stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a San Diego-based nonprofit whose mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.

The Dell Scholars Program provides 300 scholarships annually, and since 2004, has provided students with over $60 million in college scholarships and support services. They reward low-income, highly motivated students who are better than their numbers indicate and demonstrate the drive to succeed despite personal obstacles.

This matches closely with the AVID student profile: one who has made the commitment to enroll in rigorous coursework, improve his or her study skills, and wants to enroll in college.

Dell Scholars receive $20,000 each to continue their higher education for the next six years. In addition, the Dell Scholars Program provides its students with technology, resources, and mentoring to ensure they have the support they need to obtain a college degree.

AVID serves almost a million students nationally and continues to expand into school districts that desire to improve equity in their communities and ensure all students can earn a college degree.
