2021 Haven High School Alumni Association Announces 2021 Scholarship Awards

The 2021 Haven High School Alumni Association’s Veterans’ Scholarship honors Carl Stelter who graduated from Haven High School in 1946. After graduation, Carl joined the United States Army and served from 1946 to 1948, spending most of that time in Occupied Japan. He rejoined the Army in 1950 and served in both Korea and Germany until his honorable discharge in 1953. Carl was a sergeant in the Army and takes great pride in his service to our country.
Carlee Arnold was selected as the $500 Veterans’ Scholarship winner. She plans to attend the University of Kansas and study for a career as a psychiatric nurse practitioner to fulfill her calling to help others. During high school, Carlee was active in basketball, volleyball, tennis, and softball. She participated in KAY Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Art Club, and Peer Helpers. She serves her church as a kindergarten teacher. Carlee has worked all four years of high school as a child care provider and life guard at Salt City Splash. She is currently a Certified Nurses Assistant at Hutchinson Regional Medical Hospital working in the Behavior/Mental Health Unit. In addition, she is fulfilling an internship at the hospital on Monday through Wednesday mornings.
Alyssa Nisly and Grace Sawatzky each were awarded $500 Haven High School Alumni Association scholarships.
Alyssa Nisly is considering a career as a veterinarian tech at Colby Community College. She brings valuable experience with farm animals to her studies. While in high school, Alyssa was involved with basketball, cross country, managing baseball, trap shooting and FFA. She served as both reporter and secretary of FFA. Alyssa is a member of the National Honor Society. She held jobs throughout her high school years and stayed active in her church by working with the younger children, the youth worship team, and as a vacation Bible school leader. Alyssa participated in mission trips with her church and the Mennonite Mission Network.
Grace Sawatzky will attend Hutchinson Community College and intends to study nursing. During her sophomore year, Grace received her Certified Nurses’Assistant certificate and worked in the nursing field since her junior year. She will continue to work on the farm and with her farm animals throughout college. During high school, Grace was an active member of FFA, served as Chapter vice president, and participated in events such as land judging, vet science, entomology, nursery and landscape.
DR. SALLY COBERLY SCHOLARSHIP
Dylan Yoder was selected as the recipient of the $1,000 Dr. Sally Coberly Scholarship established 2012. Dr. Coberly graduated from Haven High School in 1967 and retired as the Deputy Director of the National Health Policy Forum in Washington, D.C. The scholarship is awarded to a student who has excelled in debate, forensics, and Scholar’s Bowl competition and/or excels in composition/writing skills.
Dylan plans to attend Bethel College to study business and pursue a career in music education. At Haven High, Dylan was active in debate, Scholars’ Bowl, Wildcat singers, band and forensics. Dylan served as class president until his senior year when he was elected as student body president. As a sophomore, he was selected as captain of debate and wrote the policy and morality debate cases until the end of his junior year. In forensics, Dylan participated in the Lincoln-Douglas debates, extemporaneous and humorous interpretations. He was state runner-up of the 3-A division Lincoln-Douglas debate and qualified for State Policy debate in his junior year. Dylan served as Captain of Scholars’ Bowl and was selected for the National Honor Society. He was the drum major of the band during his senior year. Active in his community, Dylan participated in a number of projects through Journey Mennonite Church and completed two mission trips.
“We congratulate all the students who applied for scholarships for their accomplishments during high school. We are very proud of the students who were selected for the awards and believe they will continue to excel as they move into their next level of education,” stated Jean Beal, chairman of the HHS Alumni Scholarship Committee.
The HHSAA committee thanks all the alumni for their generous donations to the Dollars for Scholars fund, private donations, and their membership dues in the HHS Alumni Association, all that make these awards possible.
