Attendance is limited, and the event will also be accessible via Zoom.
School of Business hosts inaugural sales competition with King’s Hawaiian
LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas School of Business hosted the inaugural KU Professional Selling Program/King’s Hawaiian Sales Competition virtually April 9-10. Seven universities joined KU in the competition, in which KU business majors won the team case competition.
Global Opportunities Expo for students, educators set for April 20-21
LAWRENCE – The University of Kansas, in partnership with Donnelly College, is hosting its annual Global Opportunities Expo (GOE). The two-day event is set for 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Tuesday, April 20, and 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Wednesday, April 21. The expo is designed for educators and students in grades 7-12 through college, but it is free and open to learners of all ages. Participants should register for the event to receive the Zoom links.

KU guest speaker to discuss anti-racism and sport leadership
LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas Department of Health, Sport & Exercise Sciences welcomes Joseph Cooper, associate professor and J. Keith Motley endowed chair of sport leadership and administration at the University of Massachusetts Boston, as keynote speaker at the 2021 Mawson Scholar Speaker Series lecture. Cooper will present “Anti-Racism, Inclusive Excellence, and the A.R.C. of Justice: A New Paradigm for Sport Leadership.”
The lecture will take place at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 21, in the Big 12 Room in the Kansas Union. In-person attendance is limited to 40 individuals, and the lecture will also be available via Zoom. The event is free and open to the public, though an RSVP is required for Zoom information access. Interested participants should RSVP via email to Chris Brown.
“We could not be more excited to have Dr. Cooper as our 2021 Mawson Scholar,” said Jordan Bass, associate department chair. “He is a standout member of the sport management community and someone I personally cannot wait to hear from.”
Cooper’s research is focused on sport management, gender and race in sport, racism and other forms of oppression, higher education and qualitative research. He received a doctorate in kinesiology, sport management and policy at the University of Georgia, a master’s degree in exercise and sport science and two bachelor’s degrees (sociology and recreation administration), all from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The Mawson Scholar Speaker Series was established in summer 2016 as an annual event, hosted by the Department of Health, Sport & Exercise Sciences. It is designed to bring a prominent sport management scholar and presenter to KU. Learn more about the speaker series online.

School of Business hosts inaugural sales competition with King’s Hawaiian
LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas School of Business hosted the inaugural KU Professional Selling Program/King’s Hawaiian Sales Competition virtually April 9-10.
Students from KU as well as University of Central Missouri, University of Georgia, University of Minnesota, University of Missouri, Oklahoma State University, Texas Tech University and Villanova University participated in the competition, sponsored and judged exclusively by King’s Hawaiian.
Events included an individual speed-selling competition and a three-round, tournament-style team case competition, which featured a business situation designed by King’s Hawaiian. Winners received cash prizes and were recognized during an awards ceremony.
The winners of the team case competition:
1. First place: University of Kansas ($3,000)
2. Second place: University of Georgia ($2,000)
3. Third place: University of Minnesota ($1,000)
The winners of the individual speed-selling competition:
1. First place: William Sullivan, University of Missouri ($300)
2. Second place: Yarizette Sequeria, Villanova University ($200)
3. Third place: Elijah Morris, University of Georgia ($100)
“I am delighted that we had the opportunity to challenge the next generation of sales professionals with a 90-second selling scenario and complex case study — both skills are imperative to have a successful career in consultative sales,” said Kristen Helling, director of the KU School of Business Professional Selling Program.
In addition to participating in the competition, students had the opportunity to hear from and network with members of King’s Hawaiian’s sales team and top executives. The School of Business plans to continue the competition in partnership with King’s Hawaiian on an annual basis.
“Each team did a fantastic job of applying their real-life and academic knowledge throughout the competition,” said Zach Vitztum, director of sales and retail operations for King’s Hawaiian. “King’s Hawaiian is proud to have brought this vision to life with the University of Kansas Professional Selling Program and looks forward to making this a world-class competition for the years to come.”

Global Opportunities Expo for students, educators set for April 20-21
LAWRENCE – The University of Kansas, in partnership with Donnelly College, is hosting its annual Global Opportunities Expo (GOE). The two-day event is set for 11 a.m.-3 p.m. April 20 and 11 a.m.-3 p.m. April 21. The expo is designed for educators and students in grades 7-12 through college, but it is free and open to learners of all ages.
The Global Opportunities Expo, organized by KU’s Center for Latin American & Caribbean Studies, seeks to engage with audiences about international education, study abroad experiences and navigating the array of international pathways in life beyond the college experience. Each year different panels, topics, themes and performances create a diverse lineup for attendees. This year’s event includes a panel on identity and belonging within global experiences, study abroad panels, calligraphy demonstrations and Pan-Africa fashion show.
Participants should register for the event to receive the Zoom links. The links will also be available at the CLACS website starting Monday, April 19.
Registration will be open throughout the event. The GOE is intended to be a drop-in format, although participants are encouraged to attend as many panels and performances as possible.
“Attendees can expect to hear from students, staff and faculty about the careers, opportunities, experiences and identities that have shaped them and led them to become involved in global pathways,” said Amanda Hill, 2021 GOE Planning Chair. “The event is constantly growing and evolving, so we hope to bring new and different ways to connect and engage with the community about the array of international opportunities ahead of them in life. It should be an exciting and lively time, even though we are keeping it fully online this year.”
