Harvey County 4-H’er Marissa Hurst encourages everyone to take part in the County Fair. “The fair is not just for people who are on the farm, because that’s what a lot of people think 4-H is. There is something for everyone there, and people who are not in 4-H can participate too.”

There are opportunities for everyone to be involved, Hurst says. She plans to bring food items, three pigs, one goat, two posters, enter four outfits and help with the bucket calf and food contests. Hurst has been involved in the fair for as long as she can remember.

“I’ve helped with the fair all of my life. I’ve been in 4-H as long as I could have been. My fair experience starts the instant I get out of school because I always have animals. I work with them (animals), try recipes, I also put together my outfits”, Hurst says.

According to Hurst, fairgoers can take benefit in more ways than one at the county fair. “Participating in the fair has taught me a lot. I am in charge of my animals.  I have to take care of my animals, make sure they have water and food because it is hot at the fair. I have to manage my time, because I am so busy. It’s also taught me a lot about friendships as well, I’ve met a lot of my friends at the Harvey County Fair”, said Hurst.

This year Hurst serves as the Harvey County 4-H Council President, Junior Leader, a member of Lucky 13 4-H Club, and will be a Senior at Burrton high school this fall.

Hurst has been involved in the county fair for over ten years, and plans to continue to help after she ages out of 4-H. This year the Harvey County Fair will be August 5-9th at the fairgrounds, 800 W. First St. in Newton. Be sure to stop by and see how you can get involved in the fair!
