Continuing to make its mark in its first year of competition, the Barton Community College Wrestling team finished first among fellow Kansas community colleges this past weekend at the Kansas Cup hosted by Newman University in Wichita, Kansas. Getting off to a rough first round start, the Cougars battled back with claiming seven individual top-six finishes to place fifth overall in the twelve team tournament. Barton will next head to Chanute on Saturday as the Cougars will wrestle in three duals hosted by Neosho County Community College.
Caysen Smith brought home hardware on Sunday battling through four consolation matches to capture third place in the 133 pound weight class. After receiving a first round bye, Smith was bounced to the backside losing a 4-0 decision to Newman University’s Jake Gentzler. Receiving a consolation round two bye, Smith then outscored Colby Community College’s Austin Swartz 11-9 to advance to the semifinal round. There Smith met Zane Baugh of Baker University as the dual remained tight with Smith escaping with a 1-0 win. In the third place match Smith defeated Region VI foe Chris Quiroz of Northwest Kansas Technical College 8-5.
Barton captured two fourth place finishes as Will Bardezbain scored in the 125 class while Zach Vesta did the same in the 149 class. Fifth place finishers were Tim Johnson in the 184 weight and Jonathan Bowen in the 197, while Kade Sander (157) and Sean Taborsky (165) finished sixth.
For Saturday’s upcoming duals in Chanute, the Cougars will take on Colby Community College, Wentworth Military Academy, and Neosho County. It will be the first meeting between Barton and the host Panthers but the Cougars defeated both Colby and Wentworth back on November 14 in the Northwest Kansas Duals by 50-0 and 51-6 scores respectively.
